Understanding Hair Fall and Dandruff in Summer

Several factors can contribute to increased hair loss and dandruff during the summer.  Causes of summer hair loss include heat and humidity, dehydration, sun exposure, excessive washing, diet, and lifestyle.

Causes of Hair Fall During Summer

Causes of Hair Fall During Summer

Summer hair loss can be caused by many factors, including the season's specific environmental and lifestyle conditions. Extreme heat, dehydration, sun exposure, excessive bathing, dietary and nutritional deficiencies, exposure to chlorine and salt water,  stress, environmental pollution, and hair care habits are the most common causes.

Why Dandruff Worsens in Hot Weather

Why Dandruff Worsens in Hot Weather

Sweat evaporates slowly in humid conditions, causing bacteria, oil, dirt, and pollutants to accumulate. These can quickly accumulate on your head, reducing the scalp barrier, and resulting in dandruff, which is more likely to occur in hot and humid weather.

Impact of Summer Weather on Hair Health

Impact of Summer Weather on Hair Health

Summer weather including heat, humidity, sun exposure, and environmental factors, can have a significant impact on hair health. Here's how summer weather can impact your hair:

  • Exposure to the sun's UV rays can cause hair to become brittle and break easily.

  • Swimming in a pool or ocean can strip your hair of moisture, leaving it dry and brittle. Chlorine can also make your hair more porous, which can lead to hair damage.

  • Excessive sweating during the summer can result in an oily scalp, which can cause dandruff.

  • The scalp is frequently overlooked when applying sunscreen, leaving it vulnerable to sunburn.

  • UV rays can break down the chemical bonds in hair dye, causing color to fade, particularly for those with dyed or highlighted hair. These can also remove hair color, leaving it dull or brassy.

  • Sun exposure and a lack of moisture can weaken hair strands, increasing the risk of breakage and split ends.

  • People often like to make tight buns or ponytails, but this puts pressure on the hair and they start breaking.

  • The body's natural reaction to the changing of the seasons can cause some people to experience increased hair shedding.

Natural Remedies for Hair Fall in Summer

The following are a few natural solutions that can lessen summertime hair loss:

  • Aloe vera soothes the scalp, reduces inflammation, and fortifies hair follicles. Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to the scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes before removing it with lukewarm water. Repeat 2-3 times per week.

  • Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, nourishing it from within and preventing protein loss, thereby reducing hair fall. Massage warm coconut oil onto your scalp and hair. Leave it on for at least an hour, or overnight, before washing it off with a gentle shampoo. Use 2–3 times per week.

  • Onion juice contains sulfur, which promotes collagen production and strengthens hair follicles. Apply the juice from a few onions to your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash it with water and shampoo. Use this remedy twice per week.

  • Fenugreek seeds are high in protein and nicotinic acid, which can help strengthen and prevent hair loss. Soak 2–3 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Apply the paste (leave for 30 minutes) and wash it off.

  • Green tea contains antioxidants that promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. Brew green tea and let it cool down. Apply it to your scalp and hair, let it sit for an hour, and then rinse with water. Use this remedy 2–3 times per week.

  • Neem contains antibacterial qualities that can help heal scalp infections, which can cause hair loss. Boil the neem leaves in water, then chill the solution and use it to rinse your hair after shampooing. Alternatively, you can put neem oil straight on your scalp. Use this medicine once or twice each week.

  • Hibiscus flowers and leaves can strengthen hair roots and reduce hair loss. Crush the hibiscus flowers and mix them with coconut oil,  Apply (leave for 30 minutes) and rinse.

  • Eggs are high in protein and biotin, which are required for good hair development. Beat an egg and add a spoonful of olive oil. Apply it, cover it with a shower cap (leave for 30 minutes), and rinse.

  • Amla is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, strengthening hair follicles and reducing hair loss. Mix amla powder and lemon juice, apply (leave for 30 minutes), and rinse.

  • A nutritious diet high in vitamins and minerals can promote hair development and minimize hair loss. Include spinach, almonds, seeds, eggs, and berries in your diet. Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
